When you think of Sushi, Sake or Kirin usually comes to mind as the beverage of choice. Wine, though, pairs really nicely with sushi if you do a little bit of homework. Asking your waiter or the house sommelier for a recommendation is always your safest bet, but this segment from In Wine Country should also give you some confidence the next time you visit one of Cincinnati’s great sushi spots.

Monday’s edition of Wine News highlighted a recent article in Wine Spectator Magazine on the benefits of screw caps over traditional corks. Whitehall Lane Winery in Napa Valley agrees, as they’ve struggled with cork taint (undesirable tastes or smells in the wine) over the years and needed a better option. Their solution: an innovative wine closure made of glass. In Wine Country highlights Whitehall Lane and their unique approach to sealing wine.

An Italian Wine Bar

So this is the business idea of the week for you entrepreneurs out there looking to get into the wine and/or food game! In Wine Country highlights Ottimista Enoteca-Cafe in San Francisco, an Italian wine bar serving 35-40 wines by the glass and another 250 by the bottle. Wines are complimented by simple small plates in the true Italian enoteca style. I love the concept because it’s so fitting to what I love about the wine culture: comfortable and casual where friends can gather to enjoy great wine, great food and great company.

Urban Wineries

Great segment from In Wine Country on urban wineries in Oakland, California. These guys truck in their grapes from Sonoma County, but then produce the wines warehouse style. These facilities still make amazing wines but overhead costs are brought way down. Makes me want to start looking for warehouse space. Who’s in?

Barrel-Aged Beer In Wine Country

Uncorked Cincinnati is all about wine, but it’s hard not to love beer just as much living in a town with such a rich brewing history. So today we focus on beer that has a close connection to wine…oak barrels.

From our favorite wine show, In Wine Country, comes the story of Firestone Walker Brewing Company. They’re unique in that they actually use oak barrels to age their beer, a method usually found only in wine making.

If you’ve seen the movie Bottle Shock like I have (several times) you’re well aware of the famous 1976 Judgement of Paris Wine Tasting that essentially put the Napa Valley front and center on the world wine stage. Two Napa Valley wines, the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay and the 1973 Stag Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon, shocked the French and the wine world by taking first among the whites and reds. A few years ago this event was recreated to celebrate the 30th anniversary. Our favorite wine show, In Wine Country, brings us the full story and the results of the rematch.

Easy Ways to Save Opened Wine

Nothing’s more frustrating than a bottle of wine that goes bad before you’ve had a chance to finish it. Sometimes you might even hesitate opening a new bottle with dinner for fear half of it will be poured down the drain a couple of days later.
