On Saturday night my wife and I had an impulse to grab dinner out. After long waits discouraged us at a couple of our regular stops in the Hyde Park area, we ended up at the newly opened Wine Guy Wine Bar and Bistro in Rookwood Commons. It ended up being one of the very best new restaurant visits we’ve had in awhile.

The Wine Guy Wine Bar & Bistro

The Wine Guy occupies the former Smith & Hawken location next to Starbucks, and they’ve done a beautiful job converting it to an open, warm, & welcoming environment. Walking in our immediate reaction was “Wow…this is a cool space.” They’ve kept the design uncluttered which makes it easy to “get” the layout. The Wine Shop is to the right, Wine Bar in the middle, and The Bistro seating to the left…but everything flows very nicely together. Since we were there to eat we headed right for The Bistro.

The Menu

The Experience
“A warm, friendly and relaxing environment where folks can learn about wine and enjoy the company of friends.“ This statement opens the menu and I think The Wine Guy has done an excellent job delivering an experience to support. Warm wood tables, a well-trained wait staff and a comfortable vibe bring it to life well. Outside of an overly sensitive smoke detector going off a couple of times everything ran smoothly, especially impressive for only their second night open.

Cabernet Flight at The Wine Guy

The Wine
Not surprising given The Wine Guy is a wine shop as well, there are A LOT of wine options from which to choose. We made it easy on ourselves by choosing a wine flight. The Wine Guy offers several flight options. We went with the Cabernet flight, all of which were very good. $15 for four healthy pours.

The Food
Everything we tried was delicious, and again, this isn’t something you anticipate coming into a new restaurant on Day 2. The menu at The Bistro is not overwhelming (just two pages) but comes with plenty of variety to keep you interested. The best part is The Bistro offers a “tapas” smaller portion option for every item on the menu. If you enjoy sampling several things like my wife and I do this is a perfect option.

Margherita Pizza

We look forward to heading back to The Wine Guy soon to try out The Wine Shop and The Bar. They are a welcomed new edition to the Cincinnati wine and restaurant landscape.

Cincinnati Wine Spotlight is a new monthly feature on Uncorked Cincinnati that spotlights the people, businesses and organizations helping to shape Cincinnati’s wine culture and industry.

A Bottle or Two owner David Pustinger has always wanted to leave his mark in his adopted home of Cincinnati.

Originally from Pennsylvania, David moved to Cincinnati in 1994 to pursue a law degree, eventually becoming a marketing executive at a local insurance company. When his company was bought out by a multinational conglomerate David decided to embark on a new journey away from corporate America, and the wine biz came calling.

David’s concept of A Bottle or Two was born out of a simple revelation: buying wine shouldn’t be confusing or intimidating. After finding a prime location for the shop in Symmes Township he began the arduous journey of turning his vision into reality. David worked with top consultants in the industry, with varying areas of expertise including architecture, retail design, a craft beer expert, and most importantly, a Master Sommelier to help select the wine.

On November 23 of last year David’s dream became reality and A Bottle or Two opened its doors for the first time. Six months later we got a chance to check in with David to find out how things are going, and what plans he has for the future.

Your doors have been opened for six months now. How have people responded to A Bottle or Two?

The initial feedback has been exactly what I had hoped for. People like the store’s eclectic inventory, have found it makes shopping for wine easy and fun, and love the ability to taste while they shop.

You had a revelation when planning the concept for A Bottle or Two: buying wine shouldn’t be confusing or intimidating. What spurred that revelation?

After talking to some local professionals and polling my friends and family who were casual drinkers I saw that theme emerge. People really do find buying wine, especially when buying for someone else or when thinking about food, to be confusing and even a little intimidating. I’ve always felt that wine should be a fun and rewarding experience. That shouldn’t be exclusive to drinking, but buying as well.

Talk about the wines you carry and your wine strategy.

We worked with Master Sommelier Ron Edwards, to develop an eclectic selection that features smaller vineyards and wineries and is reflective of my own taste as well. There are plenty of wines you can buy at your local supermarket, but we put together a wine list that you can’t find everywhere. And we wanted to make shopping for the wine easier. I decided to have clear, easy to read information cards for each wine. It features tasting notes, as well as some food pairing ideas, which is something our customers have really responded positively to.

You’re also one of the first shops to really make technology a big part of your overall strategy in helping customers. Can you talk to that a bit?

We installed a computer kiosk that allows customers to virtually browse the store’s wine list based on their own criteria. We linked the software to our website. That way anybody could simply go on-line and look at what we had. And in the very near future, customers in Ohio will be able to order directly through the website and simply come in and pick up their order.

I really feel that technology is important in today’s marketplace. Marc, our tech guy, does a great job of keeping us connected to our customers and letting them know what we have going on at the store. When you add that to the computer kiosk and our state-of-the-art presentation system for tastings, I think we are really making it easier for people who are interested in buying wine.

You’ve also invested quite a bit in creating a great tasting environment. Why have you made this so important to the shop?

I really wanted to make A Bottle or Two fun. I did a lot of research into what people were looking for, what they would enjoy while shopping for wine. The most common response, and the one we’ve really latched onto, is tasting.

We secured an on-premise liquor license that would allow for tastings in a wide variety of formats. We then installed three wine preservation units, where customers can taste 15 wines by the glass or taste as they shop the store. It’s become very popular. People love that they can taste a wine before deciding to buy it. Our happy hours, where we discount the price of a taste, have become incredibly popular in the local community. It’s a great way to start a Friday night or wind down after a long week at work. And it offers more than a run-of-the-mill wine tasting. Our staff is incredibly knowledgeable about all the wines in the store, so customers can really get an experience that goes beyond a cheap wine and cheese tasting.

It’s a scary time to start a business with the economy where it is today. Why did you decide to take the leap?

A lot of people questioned the decision to start a small business with everything going on with the economy, but creating something from the ground level is something I was passionate about. So rather than relocate my family for another corporate gig I decided to go into business for myself.

So what are your plans going forward?

There’s a lot to look forward to at the store. We are currently working out the bugs in our online ordering system. We are also preparing to unveil our ‘Wine of the Month’ club, which we believe will truly be step a above the rest. And due to popular demand, we are going to offer a series of ‘Wine 101’ education events that are really going to be a lot of fun and very informative. Our tasting schedule continues to grow, and I think we are really accomplishing a lot of the goals I had in the beginning. In the end, that’s what’s so rewarding about small business.

Stop by and say hi to David, and check out A Bottle or Two firsthand. Throughout all of May David and his team will be celebrating their Grand Opening Month with a ton of great events.

A Bottle or Two is one of Cincinnati’s newest wine shops, located in Symmes Township on Montgomery Road. I posted a quick write up on the shop about a month ago and was finally able to visit the shop in person today.

About five steps into the store I was personally greeted by owner David Pustinger who immediately offered his help pointing me in the right direction. This was the first taste of a common theme throughout the store: make it easy and comfortable for people to explore wine. David offered to take me on a personal tour of the shop which I gladly accepted.

Our first stop on the tour was the Wine Advisor kiosk, a concept that makes it easier for you to find the perfect bottle (click here to try it online!). A very easy to use (and fun) touch screen computer helps you narrow your wine search by color, varietal, price or even food pairing. You can imagine how helpful this tool is if you’re in a hurry or just want to make your choice less overwhelming.

Making the wine shopping experience less overwhelming is a focus you see and feel throughout the store. David and his team at A Bottle or Two are trying to accomplish this through technology like Wine Advisor, good old fashioned customer service, and great store design. The store has a modern but comfortable feel and I think truly unique in how much space is available just to browse. David says they’re striving for a shopping experience similar to Barnes and Noble, but wine and cheese instead of books, of course.

A comfortable seating area towards the back of the store is dedicated to regular wine tastings. Click here to join the mailing list where you’ll hear about upcoming events.

A daily tasting is also available through A Bottle or Two’s Wine Preservation System, allowing you to sample 10-20 wines kept in perfect condition to ensure the best taste, freshness and body.

A comfortable bar area is available if you just want to sit and relax with a glass of wine.

A Bottle or Two’s focus on a comfortable wine shopping experience that takes a bit of the complexity and mystery out of wine makes this shop absolutely worth visiting. They are located at 11920 Montgomery Road in Symmes Township, just south of Union Cemetery Road.

Last night my wife and I made our first trip to Piazza Discepoli’s Glendale location for the “Last Minute Wines for Christmas” wine tasting.

We’ve wanted to visit this shop for awhile as it sits right in the heart of historic downtown Glendale, one of the most charming spots in all of Cincinnati. Picture a New England town square with quaint shops and wonderful little restaurants, made even more spectacular with Holiday decorations.

Piazza Discepoli opened its first location in College Hill in the Spring of 1989, with the Glendale store added in 2003. Piazza focuses on a broad selection of American and International wines, commitment to personal service, and an aesthetic environment to deliver an overall great wine experience. The Glendale store feels welcoming from the minute you work in the door. We were really impressed with the sophistication and coziness of the store that urges you to stroll and explore.

Last night’s tasting was a selection of the staff’s favorite last minute wines for Christmas. The list included:

2008 Independent Producers Chardonnay – $11.99
Always nice to taste an American Chardonnay that is more fruit than oak. Apple and pear was especially forward.

2006 Three Doves Merlot – $19.99
Full disclosure, we’re not huge Merlot fans and the Three Doves wasn’t our favorite of the night, but overall not a bad bottle.

2007 Cline Cashmere – $15.99
Our favorite. A combination of Mourvèdre, Grenache, and Syrah gives this wine a smooth, creamy feel. More importantly, a portion of the Cline Cashmere proceeds helps fight Breast Cancer.

2006 Amalaya de Colome – $17.99
This wine, we discovered at the tasting, comes from the highest vineyard in the world, and the oldest winery in Argentina. This Malbec is smoothed nicely by Cabernet Sauvignon.

2008 Stump Jump Shiraz – $9.99
The value of the night! This is a wonderful Shiraz and at $10 an absolute must-have.

At the end of the night we walked away with a bottle of the Cline Cashmere and the Stump Jump, as well as a new appreciation of one of Cincinnati’s great wine shops.

Piazza Discepoli’s Glendale shop is located at 23 Village Square in Glendale. For more information visit www.PiazzaDiscepoli.com or visit their profile page on Uncorked.

Cincinnati welcomes a new wine shop to the scene – A Bottle or Two on Montgomery Road in Symmes Township.

I’ve not yet visited the new shop, but from the A Bottle or Two website some of the store’s features include:

More than 300 wine labels

Microbrew Beers

Gourmet Foods

Gift Cards & Gift Baskets

Space for private functions

Something that immediately caught my eye as unique is their use of technology to bring a great wine experience to life. Two examples:

Wine Preservation System – A Bottle or Two utilizes a state of the art Wine Preservation System to provide guests with 10 to 20 wines to sample every day in varying colors, varietals, bodies, and appellations. The system ensures wines are at their peak of freshness, body, and taste.

Wine Advisor Kiosk – This looks very cool, and I can’t wait to try it out. With their self-service Wine Advisor kiosk you can search for a wine by color, varietal, appellation, price, body, taste or food pairing. You’re then able to see a print out of your perfect wine selection with notes prepared by a master sommelier, with the exact location of where to find in the store. Looks like this feature will be available online soon as well.

I’m hoping to get to A Bottle or Two very soon. In the meantime please share your thoughts here at Uncorked Cincinnati if you get a chance to visit.
